Match the coating, sheen, and primer to your surface.
DIY planning · Anywhere in the USA
Start with a manageable project. Work out quantities, price the materials, and decide what you can comfortably take on yourself.
01 · Define your scope
Beginner · Plan for prep and drying time
Walls in an accessible room with sound surfaces. Ceilings, trim, major repairs, and lead-paint work are outside this plan.
Wall area = room perimeter × wall height, minus large openings. Coverage defaults to 350 sq ft per gallon per coat; replace it with your product’s label. Quantities include a 10% allowance and round up to whole containers.
For a pre-1978 home or suspected lead paint, do not sand or scrape until the hazard is assessed. EPA recommends a lead-safe certified contractor for renovation in pre-1978 homes. Read EPA guidance.

Compare paint and bulky materials such as mulch with local suppliers. Shipping can erase any savings; a local bulk delivery may be a better fit.
